Papa

爸爸 (Original Title)

"Papa" is a Hong Kong drama film produced by Word By Word Limited and supported by the Hong Kong Film Development Fund, distributed by Golden Scene. Directed and written by Philip Yung Tsz-kwong, the main cast includes Sean Lau Ching Wan, Jo Koo, Dylan So, and Hung Nok-Yi, with supporting roles by Yeung Wai Lun, Helen Tam Yuk Ying, Chan Lai-wun, Amy Chum, and Law Wing Cheong, among others. The story is inspired by the 2010 "Tsuen Wan Hsiang Wo Street Murder Case" and has the cooperation of the father from the real case, Kan Fuk-Ku. The film employs a non-linear, chapter-style narrative to tell the story of a father who runs a tea restaurant and struggles to maintain a complex relationship with his son after the son killed his wife and young daughter one night in 2008, while also cherishing the memories of the deceased. The film premiered at the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival, later becoming the closing film of the 21st Hong Kong Asian Film Festival, and is set to officially release in Hong Kong on December 5, 2024.

  • The protagonist, Yuen Wing-Nin (played by Sean Lau), returns to his tea restaurant as usual after losing his family, trying to convince himself that life goes on. His daily routine is filled with memories of the past—his wife, Kim Yan (played by Jo Koo), preparing breakfast in the kitchen, his son, Hau Ming (played by Dylan So), playing online games at the computer, their adopted three-colored cat "San Hua," and the happy moments shared during family dinners, as if that nightmare of a night had never happened. The bonds of blood have taken away his most beloved ones, and Wing-Nin cannot hate the living nor forget the dead; he can only rely on memories and fantasies to fill the void in his heart.

In this confusing life, Wing-Nin strives to live as a "father," constantly seeking a sense of reality even while separated from his son by a window. Can the suffocating relationship between father and son find hope in the long night and become a redemption for each other's survival?
