The story is set at the end of 1982, where a young boy named Chen Xiaolu sees a television for the first time at his friend Duoduo's house. Duoduo's casual channel surfing hurts Xiaolu's feelings. After returning home feeling dejected, he unexpectedly meets the blind Lao Jiu at the supply and marketing cooperative, who reveals a long-hidden secret involving the village party secretary, Chen Quanyou.
Xiaolu's father, Chen Xueli, brings home a small tape recorder from the education bureau for the elementary school flag-raising ceremony. After hearing the national anthem, Xiaolu feels a sense of vanity and decides to sneak the recorder to show off to his friends, but accidentally breaks it. Faced with the broken recorder, Xiaolu is too scared to go home and decides to seek help from Lao Jiu.
Lao Jiu convinces Xiaolu's family to take him to the county seat for repairs. During the repair process, Xiaolu discovers that the recorder isn’t broken; the tape has just been erased. He suggests that Lao Jiu play the national anthem on a suona and record it. Although Lao Jiu initially vows never to touch the suona, he eventually agrees to seek the help of the quyi troupe leader, Da Linzi.
While talking with Da Linzi, Xiaolu learns that Lao Jiu's apprentice, Chen Quanyou, has been quietly helping him. After the recording is completed, Xiaolu reconciles with Duoduo, and Lao Jiu and Chen Quanyou also resolve their past grievances.
At the school's flag-raising ceremony at the start of the new term, the suona solo of "March of the Volunteers" resonates, symbolizing the patriotic spirit of the youth.
