Yang Ya-che

Yang Ya-che (Gilles Yang), born on July 19, 1971, in Banqiao District, New Taipei City, Taiwan, initially studied French at Tamkang University. However, his passion for journalism and film led him to switch to the Department of Mass Communication. In 1998, he began his screenwriting career and contributed to the creation of the romance short film "Too Young." In 2001, Yang participated in the scriptwriting of the urban emotional drama "Farbidden Love." In 2002, he won awards for directing and screenwriting for the TV series "違章天堂 (Illegal Paradise)" and served as the assistant director for the film "Blue Gate Crossing" in the same year.

In 2004, he was nominated for Best Screenplay and Best Director at the 39th Golden Bell Awards for the TV series "Guo Le Tian Qiao, Kan Jian Hai." His debut feature film "Orz Boyz!" in 2008 was a significant success, becoming the second highest-grossing domestic film of the year and winning the Best Director Award at the 10th Taipei Film Festival. The film also sold its rights to Japan, becoming the first Taiwanese film purchased by NHK in a decade. His second feature film, "GF*BF," released in 2012, also received multiple film awards. Subsequently, his feature film "The Bold, the Corrupt, and the Beautiful" won Best Feature Film at the 54th Golden Horse Awards. Many female leads from his directed works have won Golden Bell and Golden Horse Awards, earning him the title "Queen Maker."

Throughout his career, Yang Ya-che has chosen to focus on various social issues and has worked on a range of projects, including commercials, TV dramas, documentaries, and short films. His journey has been not only a creative one but also a process of understanding life and society. In March 2022, Yang was appointed Chairman of Mirror TV, but his tenure was brief, lasting only two weeks before being succeeded by Cheng You. In May, Yang expressed dissatisfaction with Netflix after they posted a meme on Facebook mocking Taiwan's inability to obtain rapid COVID-19 test kits, leading him to cancel his Netflix subscription. In 2024, his new film "The Chronicles of Libidoists" was released nationwide, once again highlighting his deep concern and keen insight into contemporary issues. Throughout, Yang Ya-che has used his lens to showcase various aspects of life and deeply explore the multifaceted nature of humanity.
