Wong Kar-wai

Wong Kar Wai, born in Shanghai in 1958, relocated to Hong Kong at the age of five. He studied graphic design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic Institute and has a knack for weaving unique cinematic atmospheres through soulful music, exquisite dialogues, and distinctive photography. Joining TVB's director's training program in 1980, he worked as a directing assistant on shows such as "Five Easy Pieces" and "Don't Look Now". In 1982, he transitioned from television to the film industry, making his first contribution to a movie by participating in the scriptwriting for "Once Upon a Rainbow". In 1988, his directorial debut, "As Tears Go By", received high praise and was selected for the International Film Critics Week section at the Cannes Film Festival. His subsequent "Days of Being Wild" cemented his creative style. In 1991, he co-founded Jet Tone Films with Jeffrey Lau, launching films like "Chungking Express", "Ashes of Time", and "Fallen Angels", whose aesthetics and narrative styles sparked lively discussions in cultural circles. "Happy Together" won him Best Director at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, making him the first Hong Kong director to receive this honor. His works "In the Mood for Love" (2000) and "2046" (2004) were nominated at Cannes, with "In the Mood for Love" winning Best Actor and Best Technical Award. His directed film "The Grandmaster" (2013) gained international fame and won a total of 12 awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards. Today, Wong Kar Wai is a renowned international director, holder of multiple honorary doctoral degrees in literature and sociology from various countries, and an Oscar-nominated judge. In 2023, the TV drama "Blossoms Shanghai", which he produced and directed, was broadcast on CCTV and Tencent Video, marking another extension of his talent into the television industry.
