Vera Chen, born on March 9, 1980, in Shalu, Taichung, Taiwan, is a professional who excels as an actress, director, and performing arts instructor. She focuses on theater direction, film acting, and performance teaching, making significant contributions in both the theater and film industries. Chen graduated from Brunel University in the UK with a master's degree in contemporary performing arts, specializing in solo performance and creation. She also trained at the Philippe Gaulier International School of Theatre in France.
Since 2008, she has been selected for three consecutive years as a new talent creator by the National Arts Council of Taiwan. Her directorial works have been invited to various international arts festivals, including those in Seoul, South Korea; Évora, Portugal; London, UK; and Beijing, China. She participated in international artist residencies in 2011 at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris and in 2012 at the Treasure Island Arts Village in Taiwan. In 2012, her solo performance piece "Clear Life? +" represented Taiwan at the Avignon Festival in France, successfully performing 23 shows.
In recent years, Chen has also served as a performance director for several well-known Taiwanese films, including HBO Asia's series "The Teenage Psychic" and Giddens Ko's films "Mon Mon Mon Monsters" and "The Sadness." She is currently the artistic director of the Multi-X Theatre and a full-time assistant professor in the Department of Performing Arts at Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, where she plans and teaches drama performance courses. In 2019, she was nominated for Best New Director at the 56th Golden Horse Awards for her film "Boluomi," and in 2020, she received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the 57th Golden Horse Awards for her role in "The Rope Curse 2."
In 2022, her starring role in the television drama "Small & Mighty" premiered on Bilibili, and on December 8, 2023, she starred in the drama "Deep End." In 2024, the film she starred in, "Stranger Eyes" was released in Taiwan.
