Tom Lin

Tom Lin (Tom Lin Shu-yu), born on February 8, 1976, in Taipei, is a Taiwanese director. He graduated from National Hsinchu Science Park Experimental High School and obtained a bachelor's degree in Broadcasting and Television from Shih Hsin University, as well as a master's degree in film production from the California Institute of the Arts.
Lin's works often blend Eastern and Western cultural characteristics, utilizing flexible and innovative cinematography and staging to deeply explore human nature and interpersonal relationships, resonating strongly with audiences. In 1997, he began his directing career with the short film "Xiù Jué," which received recognition at Taiwan's three major film festivals and was nominated for Best Creative Short Film at the Golden Horse Awards.
After graduating from graduate school in 2002, he returned to Taiwan to become a freelance filmmaker, engaging in film direction and festival interpretation. In 2005, his self-written and directed short film "The Pain of Others" was nominated for Best Creative Short Film at the Golden Horse Awards and won multiple awards at various film festivals.
In 2008, Lin directed his first feature film, "Winds of September," which won the Best Original Screenplay award at the Golden Horse Awards, among other honors. In 2011, he directed and wrote the sci-fi film "Starry Starry Night," adapted from Jimmy Liao's picture book, creating a new genre of children's fantasy in Chinese cinema. In 2014, his self-written and directed romantic film "Zinnia Flowerl" was released, winning the Best Actress award at the Golden Horse Awards and receiving acclaim at both domestic and international film festivals.
In 2018, Lin directed "The Garden of Evening Mists," adapted from an award-winning Malaysian novel, which garnered nine nominations at the Golden Horse Awards. In 2021, he produced "American Girl," which also received multiple awards both domestically and internationally. In 2024, his film "Yen and Ai-Lee," which he wrote and directed, will be released.
