Stephen Tung

Stephen Tung (Tung Wai), born on February 6, 1958, originally named Tung Yun-wai, is a renowned martial arts and action director as well as a filmmaker from Hong Kong. He was born in Shanghai and moved to Hong Kong with his family at the age of four. Due to financial difficulties, he was sent by his grandfather to the Chunqiu drama school to study Peking Opera, where he excelled in Northern-style martial arts and Wing Chun.
He dropped out of school in the third grade to focus on Peking Opera training and entered the film industry in 1965, making his debut in director Chun Yen's "Squadron 77." At 16, he transitioned to being a stunt performer, often working as a body double, and later moved to Taiwan, quickly rising to the position of martial arts director. In 1981, he joined TVB on a contract basis and gained popularity for his role as Fang Shiyu in "The Young Heroes of Shaolin." He later starred in leading roles in series such as "The Understudy," "The Restless Trio," and "The Bold Ones."
In 1984, Stephen left TVB to work as an action director for multiple films in Hong Kong and Taiwan, occasionally taking on acting roles as well. His directorial debut was "Magic Cop," followed by action films like "Fox Hunter," "Hitman," and "Extreme Challenge." He has received 17 nominations for Best Action Director at the Hong Kong Film Awards, winning six times for films including "Downtown Torpedoes" and "Operation Mekong." In 2024, he will appear in the film "Stuntman," marking his first leading role since "Pom Pom Hot Hot" in 1992. Stephen's action directing style particularly emphasizes the integration of action and storytelling.
