Sam Quah (Quah Boon-lip), born on August 2, 1985, in Penang, Malaysia, has ancestral roots in Fujian Province. He is an outstanding Malaysian Chinese director and editor. Sam Quah completed a dual degree in Communication Studies and Advertising at Shih Hsin University in 2011, and subsequently pursued further studies in directing at the National Taipei University of the Arts.
In 2014, his short film "The Free Man" garnered widespread attention, earning nominations for the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film and the Best Short Film award at the 51st Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan. He directed his first feature film, "Sheep Without a Shepherd," in 2019, which is adapted from the Indian movie "Drishyam." That same year, he co-directed the suspense drama "Chinatown Detective" with Dai Mo, Yao Wenyin, and Lai Mukuan, starring Roy Chiu and Ning Chang.
In 2020, Sam Quah was appointed as the director for the TV series "Psychologist." By 2022, he joined the "Golden Key Creative Investment" program, reflecting his ongoing enthusiasm for film and television creation. In 2024, he participated in several significant events, including the 2024 Weibo Movie Night on June 16 and the Douyin Movie Adventure Night on June 14. His film "A Place Called Silence" premiered on July 3, and he attended the 2024 Tokyo-China Film Week held in Tokyo in October. On October 11, he participated in the "Time Youth Screen Plan" as a producer.
