Neo Yau (Yau Hawk Sau 游學修) (born September 24, 1990) is one of the few versatile figures in Hong Kong's entertainment industry, working as an actor, director, screenwriter, and online creator. He graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a degree in screenwriting. He rose to prominence in 2014 with the youth film "She Remembers, He Forgets," earning a nomination for Best New Performer at the 35th Hong Kong Film Awards for his role as "Peng Sheng-hua."
Auteur Director Journey
In 2017, he completed his first self-written, directed, and acted series, "Haters Gonna Stay," spending two and a half years refining the script. The series explores generational value differences through the conflicts between a grandfather and grandson. He continued to tackle social issues, revealing the dark realities of prisons in the crime film "With Prisoners" (2017) and portraying a paramedic facing challenges within the healthcare system in "Vital Sign" (2023).
New Media Leader
In 2020, he founded the YouTube channels "Trial & Error" and "今晚修你皮 (Tonight, I’ll Fix You)," using black humor short skits to break through the entertainment industry's downturn during the pandemic, amassing over 800,000 combined subscribers. In 2023, he expanded into music, forming a duo called N9 with ERN9 and releasing their first song, "ERROR," which satirizes absurd societal phenomena.
Milestone in Acting
In 2024, he starred in the deaf-themed film "The way we talk," earning a nomination for Best Actor at the 61st Golden Horse Awards for his portrayal of a sign language teacher, "Zi Xin," who transitions from resisting the hearing world to advocating for deaf rights. His nuanced performance was praised by judges for "redefining the cultural depth of Hong Kong films." In 2025, he will again compete for Best Actor at the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards for the same role.
