Joseph Hsu

Joseph Hsu (Hsu Chen-chieh) is a director from Taiwan, born in 1986. He earned a degree in Systems Engineering from National Tsing Hua University and later obtained a Master of Fine Arts in Film Production from New York University’s Singapore campus. Hsu has been involved in film and television production in South Korea, Japan, Nepal, Singapore, and Taipei. In 2014, he became a member of the Berlinale Talents Tokyo and participated in the Kyoto Filmmakers Lab in 2015. In 2016, his project "Nanmen Market" was selected for the National Film Center's documentary feature project, and in 2018, he received funding for his feature film "Little Big Women" from the Taiwan Film Institute. After returning to Taiwan, he completed his first narrative feature "Little Big Women" with the help of actress Vivian Hsu, gaining widespread attention. The film was selected as the opening film for the Hong Kong International Film Festival in 2020 and participated in the Asian Window section of the Busan International Film Festival and the World Focus section of the Tokyo International Film Festival. That same year, he received six nominations at the Golden Horse Awards, including Best New Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Actress. In 2024, he co-directed the film "Tales of Taipei," which was released.
