Joe Chien (Chien Jen-hao), born on May 19, 1970, is a Taiwanese film director, screenwriter, and producer with a diverse background that includes being an amateur actor and a novelist. Despite not receiving formal training in his early years and even selling goods outside cinemas, he gradually established his reputation in the film and television industry.
In 2005, he wrote and directed his debut film, "The Sequence of Underground," which earned him nominations for Best Director and Best Film at the only edition of the Taiwan New Film Awards that year, marking the beginning of his directing career. In 2008, he directed the action crime film "The Button Man," starring Francis Ng Chun-Yu, Terri Kwan, and Leon Dai. In 2010, he released the action comedy "Gangster Rock," which tells the story of a street thug.
In 2011, he served as the producer for the romantic film "L-O-V-E." The following year, he directed the action thriller "Zombie 108," which was selected for the "Midnight Extreme" section of the Brussels Fantastic Film Festival, making him a Chinese director who was selected three consecutive times at the festival. That same year, he also wrote the romantic comedy "Chrysanthemum to the beast."
In 2014, he wrote and directed the drama "The Apostles," and also directed the action horror film "Zombie Fight Club." In December 2015, the action comedy "Full Strike" was released, for which he served as the screenwriter. In 2017, his 3D thriller " The House That Never DiesⅡ" was released in mainland China, based on a true story, and it grossed 230 million RMB at the box office.
In 2024, Joe Chien directed and co-wrote the television series "Crime Scene Cleaner," and his film "Them, Behind the Door" was also released that year.
