Guan Hu

Guan Hu, born on August 1, 1968, in Beijing, with ancestral roots in Zhongcun, Pingyi County, Linyi City, Shandong Province, is a Chinese mainland director and screenwriter. He graduated from the Directing Department of Beijing Film Academy in 1991. In 1992, Guan Hu self-funded and directed his debut film "Dirt." In 2000, he directed the film "Get in,and go" and in 2001, he directed "Eyes of a Beauty," which was nominated for the Most Popular Film at the Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival but remained relatively unknown domestically. In 2002, Guan Hu transitioned to television by directing the TV series "Black Hole." From 2003 to 2008, he continuously released several TV series, including "The winter solstice," "Seven Days," "生存之民工 (Migrant Workers)," and "Being Alife Is Good!."In 2009, he directed the revolutionary-themed TV series "Yimeng," which won the highest ratings award for CCTV dramas in 2009, the Excellent TV Series Award at the 25th China TV Golden Eagle Awards, and the First Prize at the 28th China TV Drama Feitian Awards.
That same year, Guan Hu returned to the big screen with "Cow," winning the Best Adapted Screenplay at the 46th Taiwan Golden Horse Awards.In 2012, he directed the film "Design of Death," winning the Best Director Award at the 20th Beijing College Student Film Festival. In 2013, he directed "The Chef, The Actor, The Scoundrel," winning the Most Popular Director Award at the 21st Beijing College Student Film Festival. In 2014, his film "Mr. Six" won the Jury Prize at the 23rd Beijing College Student Film Festival, with lead actor Feng Xiaogang winning the Best Actor Award.In 2016, "Mr. Six" earned him the Seventh China Film Association Cup "Top Ten Screenplays" Award and the Best Director Award at the 20th Huading Awards. On October 26 of the same year, he won the Best Director Award at the 11th "Tokyo International Film Festival · China Film Week" for "Mr. Six." On September 16, 2017, he won the Best Screenwriter Award at the 31st China Film Golden Rooster Awards for "Mr. Six."
In 2020, Guan Hu directed the war film "The Eight Hundred," which grossed 3.11 billion RMB at the Chinese box office, becoming the first blockbuster film in China after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. On August 24 of the same year, he was nominated for the Director of the Year at the 11th China Film Directors' Guild Annual Commendation Conference for "My People, My Country." In May 2024, his film "Black Dog" won the Best Film Award in the Un Certain Regard section at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
