Donnie Yen (Yen Chi-Tan) was born on July 27, 1963, in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China. He is a renowned Hong Kong actor, action director, and martial arts choreographer, as well as a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Yen officially entered the entertainment industry in 1984, participating in the action-comedy film "Drunken Tai-Chi." He rose to prominence in the 1980s with several films, including "Mismatched Couples," "Tiger Cage," and "In the Line of Duty 4."
In 1992, he was invited by Tsui Hark to star in "Dragon Inn" and "Once Upon a Time in China II," solidifying his status in the film industry and making him a new generation of kung fu superstar, following in the footsteps of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li.
In 1996, Yen established his film company, Bullet Films, directing and starring in "Legend of the Wolf" and "Ballistic Kiss." Although these films did not achieve box office success, they earned him nominations for best director awards both domestically and internationally. In 1998, he moved to Hollywood to work as an action choreographer, and in 2002, he returned to the public eye by participating in Zhang Yimou's "Hero," recommended by Jet Li.
In 2003, Yen directed "The Twins Effect," for which he received the Best Action Director award at the 40th Golden Horse Awards and the 23rd Hong Kong Film Awards. He worked on the action choreography for "SPL: Kill Zone" in 2006 and achieved significant success with the kung fu film "Ip Man" in 2008, earning a nomination for Best Actor at the 28th Hong Kong Film Awards.
Throughout his career, Yen has received numerous accolades for works such as "Mouhaap/Dragon" and "Kung Fu Jungle." In 2017, he collaborated with Andy Lau for the first time in the movie "Chasing the Dragon," where he also served as a producer. In addition to his acting career, Yen is actively involved in charitable activities, launching a charity campaign in 2014 to support public welfare and donating 1 million yuan for flood relief in Henan in 2021.
Known for his swift and powerful action style, Yen has gained international recognition and remains active in various film projects. His recent works include "John Wick: Chapter 4," released in 2023, and "The Prosecutor," set to be released in 2024.
