Lee Kang-sheng, born on October 20, 1968, is a filmmaker from Taiwan who has participated in all feature films directed by Tsai Ming-liang. He made his acting debut in Tsai's film "Xiao hai" in 1991, marking the start of his artistic career. In 1992, Tsai Ming-liang wrote and directed the film "Rebels of the Neon God" based on Lee's image. Lee gained a nomination for Best Actor at the 31st Golden Horse Awards for his role as a gay salesman in the 1994 film "Vive l'Amour."
In 2000, Lee co-founded the independent film company Homegreen Films with Tsai and other filmmakers, aiming to develop films with an international perspective and original spirit. His directorial debut, "The Missing," was nominated for Best Feature Film at the Golden Horse Awards alongside Tsai's "Goodbye, Dragon Inn" Lee received several international awards for this film, including Best New Director at the Busan Film Festival and Best Director at the Athens International Film Festival.
In 2006, he wrote, directed, and starred in the film "Help Me Eros," which won the Busan Prize at the Busan Film Festival and was selected for the Official Competition at the 64th Venice Film Festival in 2007. In 2013, he won Best Actor at the 50th Golden Horse Awards and the 56th Asia-Pacific Film Festival for his performance in "Stray Dogs."
On a personal note, Lee celebrated his birthday on October 20, 2023, while filming in New York, but unfortunately suffered a second-degree burn on his left arm from hot water, requiring medical treatment. His film "Everything is Unknown" was released on September 1, 2023, and he stars in "Labyrinth," which is set to premiere on May 17, 2024. Later that year, his films "Black Ox" and "Stranger Eyes" also released in Taiwan on November 8 and November 15, respectively.
