Yang Kuei-mei

Yang Kuei-mei was born on September 6, 1959, in Taipei, Taiwan. She is a renowned actress and television host. Her acting career began in 1979 when she participated in the Taiwan Television (TTV) "Newcomer Award" program, entering the entertainment industry as a singer and was known as one of the "three little stars" alongside Li Lieh and Shao Pei-ling.
In 1981, Yang made her film debut in Lee Hsing's "Spring Comes Again." Her 1988 film "My Beloved" catapulted her to fame, breaking box office records in Mainland China and earning her the title of "Taiwan's Mother." In 1992, she received a nomination for Best Actress at the 29th Golden Horse Awards for "Hill of No Return" and won Best Actress at the Singapore International Film Festival.
In 1994, Yang starred in Tsai Ming-liang's "Vive L'Amour," which was presented at the Venice Film Festival and won the Golden Lion. That same year, she also appeared in Ang Lee's "Eat Drink Man Woman," which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In 1998, she delivered an outstanding performance in Tsai Ming-liang's "The Hole," which won the International Critics' Week Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and earned her a nomination for Best Actress at the Golden Horse Awards.
In 1999, Yang won the Best Actress award at the 34th Golden Bell Awards for her role in the television drama "Tian Gong Teng Hao Ren." In 2004, she won Best Actress at the 41st Golden Horse Awards for her performance in "The Moon Also Rises," which also won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival that year.
Yang has continued to participate in various film and television projects, collaborating with renowned directors such as Tsai Ming-liang, Ang Lee, and John Woo. In 2013, she starred in Tsai Ming-liang's film "Stray Dogs," which won the Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. In 2022, she co-starred in "Three Piglets 3" with Shi Ming-shuai, Wen Chen-ling, and Lin Bo-hong, winning the Best Host Award for a Quiz and Reality Show at the 57th Golden Bell Awards. In 2024, she won the Best Actress award for a Drama Program at the 59th Golden Bell Awards for her role in "Living."
Yang Kuei-mei's acting has received widespread recognition at domestic and international film festivals, and her works often blend profound explorations of human nature with emotional expression, keeping her active in the entertainment industry.
