  • Set against the backdrop of the Chinese Civil War in 1949, the film depicts the struggles of Shen Yuan and her husband as they arrive in Taiwan, working hard to establish their family in a foreign land. As time passes, over 40 years later, their children go abroad for education and work.
In 1988, on the Sunday after Mother's Day, Shen Yuan is home alone when she unexpectedly finds a letter from her family that had been lost for 40 years. The letter mentions that her mother has passed away, and her older brother notes that their mother always hoped for her return. Shen Yuan gazes at the family photo on the wall, feeling nostalgic. She draws the curtains, pulls out a cedar chest, and uncovers the cheongsams that hold memories of the past. As she sings and dances, it feels as though she is having a conversation with her mother across time, alternating between sadness and joy.
