Ge You, born on April 19, 1957, in Raoyang, Hebei, is a first-level actor in mainland China. He currently serves as the 14th president of the Chinese Film Performance Art Society and is the honorary leader of the Art Troupe of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions. He receives special government subsidies from the State Council. In 1979, Ge You was admitted to the Art Troupe of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, and in 1985, he made his film debut in "Sheng Xia and Her Fiancée." He gained attention in 1989 for his role as Yang Chong in the comedy film "The Trouble Shooters." In 1992, he won the Best Actor Award at the 10th Chinese TV Golden Eagle Awards for his performance in the comedy "Stories of an Editorial Board."
In 1993, Ge You won the Best Actor Award at the 13th China Film Golden Rooster Awards for the film "After Separation." In 1994, he starred in director Zhang Yimou's film "To Live," and won the Best Actor Award at the 47th Cannes Film Festival, becoming the first Chinese actor to achieve this honor. In 1996, he attempted to transform his image by portraying the lead character in the historical film "The Emperor's Shadow." Later, in 1998, Ge You won the Best Actor Award at the 21st Hundred Flowers Awards for his role in "The Dream Factory," and in 1999, he starred as Han Dong in "Sorry Baby." In 2002, he again received the Best Actor Award at the 25th Hundred Flowers Awards for "Big Shot's Funeral," and in 2004, he won the same award for the New Year's film "Cell Phone."
In 2008, Ge You played Qin Fen in the romantic film "If You Are the One." In 2009, he served as the chairman of the jury at the first Macau International Film Festival. In 2011, he won the Best Actor Award at the 14th Chinese Film Huabiao Awards for his role in the drama "Sacrifice" and subsequently signed with Emperor Entertainment. In 2012, he received the Annual Male Actor Award from the Chinese Film Directors' Association for "Let the Bullets Fly." In 2014, Ge You was awarded the Knight of the French Order of Arts and Letters. In 2016, the drama film "The Wasted Times" featuring Ge You was released. In 2019, he made his debut on the CCTV Spring Festival Gala stage, performing the sketch "The 'Son' Has Arrived." In 2022, he starred in the drama film "The Hedgehog."
