Zero Chou, born on July 24, 1969, in Keelung, Taiwan, graduated from the Department of Philosophy at National Chengchi University. She once worked as a news reporter for the Golden Horse Daily and a cable TV station. Later, she began making documentaries and transitioned to independent film production. In recent years, she has also ventured into directing TV idol dramas. Known for her expertise in documentaries and LGBT-themed films, she is one of the rare female directors in Taiwan who also serves as a producer. She is openly in a relationship with photographer Hoho Liu, and their films are often marked with "a Zero+Hoho Film."
In 1993, Zero Chou directed the short drama "燈 (The Light)," which won the Excellent Creative Short Film Award from the Film Foundation, marking the start of her directing career. In 1998, she directed the documentary "Looking For The Forgotten Artists," which won the Best Documentary Video Award at the 21st Golden Harvest Awards. In 2001, her documentary "Headhunting Festival" won the Best Documentary Video Award at the 24th Golden Harvest Awards. In 2004, she directed her first feature film, "Splendid Float." In 2007, her drama film "Spider Lilies" won the Teddy Award for Best Feature Film at the 57th Berlin International Film Festival. In 2008, her drama film "Drifting Flowers" was selected for the Panorama section of the 58th Berlin International Film Festival. In 2013, she directed and produced the romance film "Ripples of Desire," which was released in mainland China. In 2017, she wrote, directed, and released the romantic comedy film "We are Gamily" in Taiwan. In 2024, her sci-fi series "Q18 Quantum Dice" is set to air. Her latest project, "Six Asian Cities Rainbow Project," will span six Chinese-speaking cities—Taipei, Beijing, Chengdu, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Penang—producing six LGBT-themed films to reflect the contemporary life stories of the Asian Chinese LGBT community.
