The Legend of Heroes
  • In the late Southern Song Dynasty, the Jin invaders wreak havoc while treacherous ministers dominate the court. The families of commoner heroes Guo Xiaotian and Yang Tiexin betroth their children, but tragedy strikes when they are persecuted by the Jin forces. Taoist priest Qiu Chuji of the Quanzhen Sect and the Seven Freaks of Jiangnan make a bet to find and train the descendants of the Guo and Yang families, agreeing to a martial arts contest at the Drunken Immortal Tavern in eighteen years.
Guo Jing (played by Ci Sha) and Yang Kang (played by Wang Hongyi) grow up under the care of the Seven Freaks of Jiangnan and Qiu Chuji. Eighteen years later, Guo Jing travels south under his master's orders and meets Huang Rong (played by Bao Shang'en), the daughter of "Eastern Heretic" Huang Yaoshi. They fall in love, but their relationship faces many challenges. "Western Venom" Ouyang Feng seeks to marry his nephew Ouyang Ke to Huang Rong. After several contests, Guo Jing emerges victorious, but five of his masters are killed on Peach Blossom Island, leading to a misunderstanding and separation between Guo Jing and Huang Rong.
Yang Kang, lured by wealth and power, acknowledges the Jin leader as his father. During an unintended martial arts contest for marriage, he falls in love with Mu Nianci (played by Huang Yi), the adopted daughter of Yang Tiexin. However, he remains unrepentant and repeatedly harms Guo Jing, Huang Rong, and other heroes, assisting the Jin in capturing the Wu Mu Testament. Ultimately, he meets a tragic end at the Iron Spear Temple in Jiaxing.
Guo Jing and Huang Rong travel extensively, meeting martial arts masters and improving his skills. He avenges his father's death, resolves the grudges of his teachers, retrieves the Wu Mu Testament, leads an army to the west, follows his late mother's teachings, ascends Mount Hua for the sword discourse, and saves Xiangyang from national peril. The once simple and honest archer boy transforms into a formidable man who bravely shoulders the responsibility of protecting his fractured homeland.
