Xu Bing

Xu Bing, born in 1966 in Jinhua, Zhejiang, China, is a Chinese screenwriter, director, and producer. He graduated from the Department of Drama Literature at the Chinese Academy of Traditional Opera in 1996 with a bachelor's degree and subsequently joined the art studio of the China National Peking Opera Company as a screenwriter. In 1999, after leaving his job, Xu Bing founded Zhibing Studio and began working as a freelance film and television creator. In 2000, he served as the screenwriter for the drama film "DiSanTiaoXian." In 2001, the crime investigation drama "The VI Group of Fatal Case," for which he was the screenwriter, was officially broadcast and set multiple viewership records. In 2004, the anti-Japanese spy drama "Zhang Ga the Soldier Boy" became the annual viewership champion of CCTV Channel 8 after its broadcast. In September of the following year, the television drama "Struggles in an Ancient City" began filming, with Xu Bing responsible for script adaptation. In 2006, the romance suspense drama "愛了散了 (Love and Dispersal)" premiered. In 2008, he co-wrote the action film "Connected" with Yuen Kam-lun and Benny Chan, which won the Most Media Attention Award in the Media Focus Unit at the Shanghai International Film Festival and the Best Action Film Gold Award at the Houston International Film Festival. In 2011, the romance drama "Please Forgive Me" premiered. In 2014, the suspense war drama "Red" was broadcast, sparking a "The Red" craze with its combination of romance and detective elements.
In 2017, Xu Bing directed his first film, "Strangers," which won the Most Media Attention Director Award in the Media Focus Unit at the Shanghai International Film Festival and the Best Action Film Gold Award at the Houston International Film Festival. On January 13, 2019, the reality-themed TV series "New World," which he wrote and directed, premiered and sparked heated discussions among viewers. In April of the same year, the spy drama "The Inquiry in 1938," for which he served as the chief producer, was broadcast, ranking first in both national network and CCTV viewership for fourteen consecutive days and surpassing 100 million online views. In 2021, Xu Bing was nominated for the first Aolaid International TV Festival's Outstanding TV Screenwriter Award in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China. In 2023, the TV series "Where Dreams Begin," for which he was the screenwriter, was broadcast. In the same year, his self-written and directed period romantic road legend drama "Fearless Blood" premiered on Tencent Video's "X Theater," earning him the 2023 Tencent Video Golden Goose Honor for Best Original Screenwriter, among other accolades. In 2024, the TV series "What A Wonderful World," which he wrote and directed, began filming, and the film "The Legend of Heroes," which he also wrote and directed, was broadcast.
